Bird-infecting adenoviruses are classified into the genera <i>Aviadenovirus</i>, <i>Siadenovirus</i>, and <i>Barthadenovirus</i>. These viruses typically exhibit a narrow host range and often establish subclinical infections, although certain strains may induce severe disease, particularly in young or immunocompromised hosts. Their evolution is strongly shaped by long-term host–virus coevolutionary processes.
This review aims to summarise the genetic diversity, evolutionary relationships, and pathogenic potential of avian adenoviruses, with particular emphasis on strains detected in wild bird populations and their epidemiological relevance.
To display the evolutionary relations of avian adenoviruses, a phylogenetic analysis was conducted using amino acid sequences of the viral DNA polymerase from representative strains of all avian adenovirus species. The analysis confirmed the clear monophyletic separation of the three genera and highlighted patterns consistent with host-associated evolutionary lineages. In addition, current diagnostic approaches, including conventional virological methods and molecular techniques such as PCR and next-generation sequencing, were reviewed. Molecular diagnostics, particularly PCR-based assays, remain central to wild bird adenovirus detection.
Clinical manifestations of avian adenovirus infections range from asymptomatic infections to severe systemic disease, influenced by host factors and environmental stressors. Increasing evidence suggests that host-switching events and ecological changes may enhance the epidemiological significance of these viruses, underscoring the importance of continuous surveillance in both wild and domestic bird populations.
<sumDscr/></stdyInfo><method><dataColl><sources/></dataColl><anlyInfo/></method><dataAccs><setAvail/><useStmt/><notes type="DVN:TOU" level="dv"><a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0">CC BY-NC 4.0</a></notes></dataAccs><othrStdyMat><relPubl><citation><titlStmt><titl>Genetic diversity, evolution, pathogenicity, and diagnostics of wild bird adenoviruses</titl></titlStmt><biblCit>Genetic diversity, evolution, pathogenicity, and diagnostics of wild bird adenoviruses</biblCit></citation></relPubl></othrStdyMat></stdyDscr><otherMat ID="f2164178" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164178" level="datafile"><labl>Phylogenetic_tree_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa_edited.emf</labl><txt>Visual representation of the phylogenetic tree (EMF format)</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">image/x-emf</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164182" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164182" level="datafile"><labl>Phylogenetic_tree_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa_edited.png</labl><txt>Visual representation of the phylogenetic tree (PNG format)</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">image/png</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164176" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164176" level="datafile"><labl>Phylogenetic_tree_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa_edited.tre</labl><txt>The resulting phylogenetic tree in Newick format</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/octet-stream</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164180" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164180" level="datafile"><labl>Phylogenetic_tree_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa_edited_MEGA7.mtsx</labl><txt>Tree data compatible with MEGA7 software</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/octet-stream</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164179" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164179" level="datafile"><labl>Protein_alignment_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa.fasta</labl><txt>Original amino acid sequence alignment of the adenoviral DNA polymerase</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/octet-stream</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164177" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164177" level="datafile"><labl>Protein_alignment_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa_edited.fasta</labl><txt>Refined protein alignment used for phylogenetic reconstruction, edited by TrimAl v1.3 Automated1 algorithm</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/octet-stream</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164181" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164181" level="datafile"><labl>Protein_alignment_avian_AdV_species_pol_aa_edited_model_selection.csv</labl><txt>Data regarding the selection of the best-fit evolutionary model for the edited alignment</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">text/csv</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f2164183" URI="https://repo.researchdata.hu/api/access/datafile/2164183" level="datafile"><labl>readme.txt</labl><txt>README file</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">text/plain</notes></otherMat></codeBook>
