Abstract:

It is a well-known fact that the “golden age” of the periodical press in Hungary dates back to the Belle Époque. Around 1900, between 1000-1200 Hungarian and foreign-language daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, periodicals and other printed press products were published in the country. The number doubled a decade later, but even in the last year of peace before the First World War, around 1,700 periodicals were still being printed. It is possible that this huge number of periodicals is the reason why the academic history of the press (History of the Hungarian Press) was completed in 1892 and the researches of Margit Busa (Hungarian Press Bibliography) in 1867. Although a huge research effort resulted in a repertory of 7666 items covering the Hungarian press products of the interwar period (Bibliography of Hungarian newspapers and periodicals 1921-1944), only different (and often contradictory) lists of the newspapers of the period in between are available to the interested public. The press bibliography, which will be expanded in the coming years, is a small part of the outputs of postdoctoral fellowship PD 128674 of the National Research and Development and Innovation Office. The press database will first include political dailies and weeklies published in the countryside between 1896 and 1929, mixed-content newspapers, and literary or literary journals. (The reason for the narrowing down was that in the period in question, these types of newspapers regularly published fiction of a high standard.) The items were selected on the basis of the lists of periodicals produced by Ferenc Szinnyei and his colleagues every year from the 1870’s till 1913, published in the Vasárnapi Újság (‘Sunday Newspaper’) and later in the Magyar Könyvszemle (‘Hungarian Book Review’), György Kemény's booklist (Hungary's periodical press from 1911 to 1920) and the repertories already mentioned. The records include the title, place of publication, date of publication and title variations of the periodicals, the periods of discontinuance of the periodicals, and any discrepancies about publication miseries. Following a second round of expansion, the database also includes records of daily and weekly newspapers, mixed content/magazines and periodicals published in Budapest between 1885 and 1918, with regular or occasional fiction content.
