Abstract:

The dataset comprises materials published in monographic form that relate to a comprehensive, diachronic study of fortifications in Tolna County, ranging from prehistoric hillforts through fortifications of the Árpád Period and the medieval era to early modern Kuruc-period earthworks. Data collection and field documentation focus exclusively on the territory of present-day Tolna County. The project pursued a dual objective: first, the production of a scholarly, county-level synthesis of defensive structures; and second, the systematic documentation and monitoring of their condition. This latter aim is of particular importance, as fortifications protected by ramparts and ditches have undergone substantial degradation in recent decades as a result of intensive agricultural activity, deforestation, and various forms of environmentally damaging land use. Consequently, for a growing number of sites, reliable documentation is now possible primarily through aerial reconnaissance and aerial photography. The corpus includes both prehistoric and medieval fortified sites. Roman-period fortifications are referenced only where defensive structures of other periods were established at the same location. With regard to Ottoman-period palisaded fortifications and Kuruc-period earthworks, the dataset relies chiefly on previously published results and syntheses produced by other researchers. Individual site entries typically include the following components: location, research history, field survey/excavation/topographic survey, aerial photographic documentation, description of finds, and chronological assessment. For medieval castles, this is supplemented by information on ownership history and the spatial and historical relationships of nearby contemporary settlements. Visual documentation generally follows a standardized structure, comprising a site plan, key cartographic representations and photographs, contour-based topographic surveys (with reconstructions where applicable), and the presentation of representative artefacts. Surveys produced at different times and using diverse methodologies were digitized and harmonized over the course of the project. In selected cases, comparison with aerial imagery allows for the assessment of the extent of site degradation over time. Additionally, digital terrain models were generated for several sites, facilitating the interpretation of topography and survey data.
