Established in 1927, the Tihany-based institute, now known as the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute (HUN-REN BLRI), is the country's largest biological research institute with a long history, and is a key research centre for the protection of water quality and fish management in Lake Balaton. Its main task is environmental research in freshwaters. We focus on the biota of Lake Balaton and its catchment, its spatial and temporal variations, life processes, metabolic characteristics and the local and global processes, environmental factors and human impacts that affect them. The Institute also carries out basic and applied research related to the international conventions in force on the protection of aquatic habitats, biodiversity and water quality. We are actively involved in and open to further collaborations with the scientific and economic communities in the field of scientific and research development, both nationally and internationally.

Horváth, Hajnalka, 2026, "Long-term Nutrient Concentration Dataset (1985–2025) for the Siófok and Keszthely Basins of Lake Balaton", https://hdl.handle.net/21.15109/ARP/8LLWU4, ARP, V1
This dataset contains measurements of total and dissolved nutrient concentrations (NH₄–N, NO₃–N, urea–N, TDN, TN, SRP, TDP, TP) collected in Lake Balaton between 1985 and 2025 (with significant gaps). The data represent monitoring results from two basins: the Siófok Basin (EOV X: 175982; EOV Y: 564770) and the Keszthely Basin (EOV X: 156046; EOV Y:...

Pallos, Réka; Bánó, Bálint; Takács, Péter, 2026, "Socio-ecological implications of black spot disease in European perch: linking parasite dynamics and angler behaviour in a large shallow lake", https://hdl.handle.net/21.15109/ARP/UMUIYT, ARP, V1
This dataset contains photographic data used to study parasitism in European perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Lake Balaton. We analyzed photographs to determine the location of parasites on the perch’s body, investigating both the prevalence and also the spatial distribution of Apophallus donicus in Lake Balaton. Additionally, we created a Hungarian...
