Work in the Research Group has two goals. One is an up-to-date description and analysis of the diachronic processes that have shaped the Hungarian phonological system from the Early Old Hungarian period to the present day. We work on a new comprehensive survey of these changes in the context of current models of phonological change, the interaction between phonology and morphology, and the life cycle of sound changes. The other goal is to study the diatopic variety of Hungarian with the help of the most recent methods of quantitative linguistic geography. We use the methods of dialectometry to research the dialect continuum, similarities between dialects and the possibilities of their classification. We perform detailed acoustic analyses of the vowels of the various language varieties to gain insight into their intra- and intersystemic aspects.

Ennek a kutatócsoportnak egyik célja a magyar nyelv történeti fonológiájának kutatása korszerű keretben, a fonológiaelmélet és a tágabb értelemben vett nyelvelmélet összefüggéseibe helyezve a hangtörténet korábbi és új eredményeit. A kutatócsoport másik célja a magyar nyelv térbeli változatosságának vizsgálata, elsősorban a Kárpát-medencei magyar nyelvváltozatoké. Kutatásaink többnyire a kvantitatív nyelvföldrajz körébe sorolhatók. A dialektometria eszköztárával vizsgáljuk a nyelvjárások közti hasonlóságot, a nyelvjárások csoportosításának lehetséges irányait és a nyelvi kontinuumot. Hangfelvételek akusztikai elemzésével kutatjuk a magyar nyelvjárások magánhangzórendszereit, célunk a rendszereken belüli és a rendszerek közötti összefüggések feltárása.
