The Institute of Biochemistry of the HUN-REN Biological Research Centre, Szeged first gained international recognition for the investigation of restriction modification systems and the biological role of lipids. During the 2000s the Institute considerably broadened its profile bringing synthetic biology, evolutional biology and systems biology into its scope. The research topics of some of the groups can still be classified as classical biochemistry, such as the investigation of DNA-protein interactions or receptor-ligand interactions, but today, research is mostly driven by systematic, high throughput analyses and the application of deep learning. In the last decade, the Institute of Biochemistry displayed the most dynamic development amongst the institutes of HUN-REN BRC which is reflected in the number of publications, the number of researchers and also the amount of financial support from grants awarded. The Institute contributes to the infrastructure of HUN-REN BRC with some crucial equipment, such as a mass spectrometer suitable for metabolomics research, an instrumentation system for protein analysis, a Drosophila behaviour lab, a cell culture lab, a high performance computer cluster, a level-B isotope lab, a peptide synthesis unit, an isothermal titration calorimeter and numerous types of modern microscopes.
